The Johannes de Doperkerk ( German  Johannes-der- Täufer -Kirche ) is a Gothic Protestant parish church in the district 's-Heer Abtskerke of the municipality of Borsele in the Dutch province of Zeeland .

history

The church, which was consecrated to St. John the Baptist until the Reformation , was built in the 14th century. It is considered to be the most preserved medieval village church on Zuid-Beveland . Dirk VII. Count of Holland donated Abtskerke to Middelburg Abbey in 1196 . After that there was a parish as Abpfarrung of Middelburg West Minster . From here, subsidiary churches were founded in the neighboring towns of Nisse and Sinoutskerke .

The oldest part of the Johannes Church is the choir, which originally had a straight ending. In the 16th century the 35 closure was added. In addition, the tower and the single-nave nave with its later chapel-like side aisles in the north and south come from the 14th century. On the north side of the choir there is a walled-in arch, where a larger aisle was probably originally planned, which was never built. During the restoration of the church from 1964 to 1968, a simple arched window from the 14th century was reconstructed on the south side of the chancel and a sacristy was added to the old foundations.

Since the closing of the medieval church in the neighboring Sinoutskerke in 1906, the local believers have also belonged to the Protestant parish. The parish belongs to the Protestantse Kerk in Nederland, which was created in 2004 .
