John of Cologne (saint)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Heer , known as Johannes von Köln (born in Cologne at the beginning of the 16th century ; died July 9, 1572 in Brielle ) was a Dominican and Catholic priest in Hoornaar in the Netherlands before and at the time of the Eighty Years War and is a saint of the Catholic Church.

In April 1572, Dutch troops were able to conquer the city of Brielle and subsequently the provinces of Holland and Zeeland from the Spanish-Catholic occupying forces. Johannes and other Catholic clergy found in Gorkum were arrested and brought to Brielle. They were interrogated and given the prospect of freedom if they refrained from their creed and the Catholic Church's claim to power over the Netherlands, which they did not do under torture either. John of Cologne was hanged on July 9, 1572 together with the Premonstratensians Adrian Jansen and Jakob Lacoupe, eleven Franciscans , an Augustinian and four diocesan priests .

On November 24, 1675 Pope Clement X beatified this group as the martyrs of Gorkum and on June 29, 1867 they were blessed by Pope Pius IX. canonized .
