John of Phanijoit

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes von Phanijoit (* in Phanijōit ; † April 29, 1210 in Cairo ; also Johannes Phanidjoitanus ) is a Coptic neo- martyr .

The Copt John converted to Islam before 1199 , finally reverted to Christianity and declared himself ready to martyrdom through public confession to atone for his apostasy . On April 29, 1210 he was executed on the banks of the Nile near Cairo as a denier of Islam.

The report on the life and death of John, written in Coptic in 1211, is intended to urge a Christian audience to stand firm in the Christian faith and to arm them against the apostasy to Islam.
