John of Valence
Saint John of Valence (* 1070 near Lyon , † March 21, 1145 in Valence , France ) was Bishop of Valence from 1141 to 1145 .
Johannes was initially a Cistercian monk in the Cîteaux monastery . In 1118 he was appointed the first abbot of the newly founded Bonnevaux monastery . In 1141 he was appointed Bishop of Valence. It is said that he felt so unworthy of the task that he had to be dragged to the altar at the episcopal ordination . As a bishop, he made a name for himself primarily through his social commitment.
John was buried in the Cathedral of Valence . His bones rested there until they were destroyed by the Huguenots in 1562 .
On December 9, 1903, Pius X approved the veneration as a saint, together with St. Theobald of Vienne .
