The Johanneskirche ( Swedish : Sankt Johannes kyrka ) is a church building on a hill in Stockholm 's Norrmalm district .

history

In 1651 a wooden chapel was built in the cemetery at this point. Shortly afterwards, plans arose to build a stone church on the same site; but it was not until the 1770s that King Gustav III. permission to build. The architect Jean Eric Rehn was commissioned to design a church in the classical style , the construction of which began on September 14, 1783.

In February 1784 the king ordered the construction freeze in a letter from Italy, as he had come into contact with new currents abroad and now regarded Rehn's church as old-fashioned. Gustav III then gave the French architect Léon Dufourny the order to plan another church. Its design without windows was probably not well received by the parish concerned, because the old wooden chapel was expanded instead of a new building.

At the end of the 19th century there were again plans for a stone church and so a competition was launched. Carl Möller's proposal for a building in neo-Gothic style made of brick emerged victorious and on September 14, 1883, exactly 100 years after the start of construction of the first attempt, the new building was decided. On Pentecost Sunday 1890, the church was consecrated by Archbishop Anton Niklas Sundberg in the presence of King Oskar II.

Facility

The high lancet windows with stained glass are striking . In the center window of the choir you can see Jesus on the cross as well as Mary and the apostle John , who gave the church his name. The remaining four windows of the choir show the twelve apostles in groups of three. Other windows depict Jesus' birth and resurrection. The windows were produced by Franz Xaver Zettler in Munich.

The ceiling paintings of the choir are by Agi Lindegren .

The altar by Theodor Lundberg is in neo-Gothic style and shows Jesus on the cross surrounded by various people from the Old Testament such as Abel, Melchizedech as well as Aaron and Isaac.

The church has a peculiarity. The red bell tower , a wooden building from 1692, stands 120 m to the south .
