The St. John Castle Lagow ( Polish Zamek w Joannitów Łagowie ) is on a between the Tschetschsee (Ciecz) and the Łagów Lake ( Jezioro Łagowskie located) Peninsula in Lagow , Lubusz . The oldest parts of today's hilltop castle were built on the castle hill on Lagower Fließ in the first half of the 14th century.

history

In the second half of the 13th century there was a border castle built by the Ascanians against Poland to secure the trade route from Frankfurt (Oder) via Reppen ( Rzepin ) and Schwiebus to Posen . When the border moved further east , the border castle was no longer needed and was given to the von Klepzig family as a fief together with surrounding villages and the castle in Groß Gandern ( Gadków Wielki ).

In 1347 Lagow went first as a pledge, then in 1350 as property to the Order of St. John . 23 localities belonged to Lagow; part of it formed a chain of villages that stretched on the north bank of the Pleiske from the mouth of the Lagower River downstream to Sandow. After 1318 a commandery of the Order of St. John was formed, to which, in addition to Lagow, Zielenzig also belonged.

After 1351 a new castle was built, which comprised two rectangular areas of roughly the same size. The Ordensburg was built in the eastern area and a farmyard in the western area. A Komtur von Lagow is attested for 1357, 1372 the name of a Komtur is mentioned for the first time: Heinrich von Wedel.

For 1367 it is recorded that the convent of Lagow consisted of seven knight brothers and one priest brother. When Lagow Castle was threatened by a Polish- Hussite army in 1433 , Komtur Balthasar von Schlieben switched to the Polish-Hussite side. In 1435 Nicolaus was from Colditz Commander, previously commander of Tempelhof , was until this Coming was sold to the cities of Berlin and Colin. From 1449 to 1458 Liborius von Schlieben was Komtur von Lagow. In 1460, 1464 and 1467 the castle served as a meeting place for Brandenburg councilors in order to prepare negotiations with Poland.

With the introduction of the Reformation in the Neumark in 1538, the Johanniter of the Ballei Brandenburg also became Protestant . Since the Commandery now had a family, the interior of Lagow Castle was rebuilt. During the Thirty Years' War the castle was taken by Swedish troops in 1640 and passed to Brandenburg-Prussia after the war .

The Order of St. John was repealed by a royal edict in 1810 and its goods were subsequently secularized . Lagow became part of a manor that existed until 1945. The castle is currently owned by the municipality and is leased as a hotel, restaurant and conference venue.
