John Barrow (soccer coach)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Barrow (* before 1900 , † after 1917 ) was an English football coach . He is considered the first coach in the history of FC Barcelona .

In 1917 Barrow was appointed coach of FC Barcelona by Joan Gamper . In previous years, the role of coach was also taken over by the captain. He directed his first game on January 7, 1917 against FC Internacional in the Catalan championship . Barrow stayed as coach of FC Barcelona for four months and coached Barça in 19 games, of which he won twelve and lost two. During this time he did not win a title with FC Barcelona. In addition, Barcelona were excluded from the 1917 Catalan championship because they had used a foreign player with the deployment of the Argentine Juan Garchitorena . That was forbidden at the time; so Barça lost the championship that was already believed to be safe. He was succeeded by his compatriot Jack Greenwell .
