John Blackwood (born August 31, 1877 in Glasgow , † January 4, 1913 ibid) was a Scottish football player .

Career

Blackwood was born in Maine, USA in 1877, but went to school in Scotland and joined Petershill FC at the age of 20 . In mid-September 1899 Blackwood and Willie McOustra played for Celtic Glasgow in a test match against a team from the Orange Free State called " Kaffirs " and both were signed following the game. Blackwood made his league debut for the Celts on September 30 against Heart of Midlothian , but was so overwhelmed in the 2-0 defeat in the center-forward position that after half-time Barney Battles moved into the top of the attack and this was his only appearance for Celtic stayed. In late October 1899 he was awarded for the remainder of the season to Partick Thistle , with whom he won the championship of the Scottish League Division Two. In May 1900 he moved to England at Woolwich Arsenal , for which he scored six goals in 17 league games in the 1900/01 season and where he was in the center-forward position in competition with Ralph Gaudie and Alex Main .

As a result, he continued his career in the Southern Football League , first with Reading FC , with which he finished 2nd in 1902, then with the Queens Park Rangers , for which he scored 33 goals in two seasons and developed into a crowd favorite. In 1904 the eager striker with a hard shot came to West Ham United , where he temporarily replaced Billy Bridgeman at the turn of the year 1904/1905 . Blackwood scored a goal on his debut against Portsmouth FC , but the game was lost, as were the three following, and Blackwood lost his place back to Bridgeman. In September 1905 Blackwood moved back to Scotland for the amateur club FC Royal Albert .
