John G. Blystone

John G. Blystone , also John Blystone, Jack G. Blystone or JG Blystone (born December 2, 1892 in Rice Lake (Wisconsin) , United States , † August 6, 1938 in Beverly Hills , California ) was an American film director , who celebrated his greatest successes in the genre of slapstick comedy.

Life

Blystone had studied at the university in his home state Wisconsin before he was hired as a director when the First World War broke out in 1914. He initially directed a wealth of short films, mostly for small companies, initially several times as “Jack Blystone”. Again and again it was a question of comedies with which he would later be most likely associated. In 1923 Blystone was also allowed to make full-length films. That year he landed his first major acclaim as co-director of Buster Keaton's early masterpiece With Me - Niagara . Excursions into the dramatic subject with adventurous stories like " Dick Turpin ", " Girl Smuggler " and " Captain Lash " were no less promising. From 1924 to 1926, Blystone directed several westerns and adventure stories with the then famous cowboy actor Tom Mix , a real box-office magnet of those years.

Even in Austria and Germany in the interwar period, Blystones' not exactly demanding productions enjoyed some popularity with audiences, and many of his works were shown in cinemas there. The transition from silent to talkies was no problem for Blystone, who had directed almost 80 films in just a decade and a half: in 1931 he directed a Charlie Chan crime thriller (“Charlie Chan's Chance”), and the following year with “ Hot Pepper” ”(In Austria:“ girls smugglers ”) a popular comedy with the well-established duo Edmund Lowe / Victor McLaglen and another year later, in 1933, Lilian Harvey's second Hollywood film“ My lips don't lie ”. Blystone's career, which comprised well over 100 films, ended in 1938 shortly before his unexpected death with the two fairly successful Laurel & Hardy comedies " Dick und Doof als Salontiroler " and " Langeleitung ". The director , who died of a heart attack , missed the premiere of the last-named production by almost two weeks.
