John Carpenter Carter

General Carter

John C. Carter (* 19th December 1837 in Waynesboro , Georgia , † 10. December 1864 ) was a brigadier general of the Confederate in the Civil War .

Life

Carter studied law at Cumberland University in Lebanon , Tennessee and then briefly at the University of Virginia before returning to Cumberland where he graduated. He then opened a law practice in Memphis , Tennessee shortly before the outbreak of the Civil War .

In the spring of 1861, he joined the Confederate Army as a captain in the 38th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. On April 6 to 7, 1862 he led his men in his first major battle at the Battle of Shiloh , also on October 8 of the same year at the Battle of Perryville in Kentucky and on December 31, 1862 to January 2, 1863 the Battle of the Stones River , whereupon he received several awards for his bravery. After the Battle of Chickamauga on September 19 and 20, 1863, he and his men were used to secure the border. In 1864 he took command of Brigadier General Wright and led his new troops in the Atlanta campaign from May 1864 . On July 7, 1864, he was promoted to brigadier general and took over command of the division of Major General Cheatham in the Battle of Jonesboro . Then he returned to Tennessee to prevent the advance of Union troops .

Carter was fatally wounded on November 30, 1864 at the Battle of Franklin and died on December 10, 1864 of the consequences of his injury.
