John Cecil, 5th Earl of Exeter ( 1648 - August 29, 1700 ) was an English peer and politician.

Life

Cecil was the only son of John Cecil, 4th Earl of Exeter from his marriage to Frances Manners, daughter of John Manners, 8th Earl of Rutland . He was at the Stamford School and St John's College of Cambridge University trained.

In 1675 he was elected Knight of the Shire for Northamptonshire to the House of Commons . When his father died on March 18, 1678, he followed him as Earl of Exeter and Baron Burghley and rose to the House of Lords .

At the coronation of King James II in 1685, he held the office of Lord High Almoner .

Cecil traveled a lot. Among other things, he was in Italy in 1679, 1681 and 1699. In his house he collected memorabilia from these trips.

Marriages and offspring

Cecil was married to Lady Anne Cavendish, daughter of William Cavendish, 3rd Duke of Devonshire , from May 4, 1670 . They had eight children:

  • John Cecil, 6th Earl of Exeter (1674-1721);
  • Hon. William Cecil (before 1682-1715), MP for Stamford 1698-1705;
  • Hon. Charles Cecil (c. 1683-1726), MP for Stamford 1705-1722;
  • Hon. Edward Cecil († 1723);
  • Lady Christian Cecil;
  • Lady Ann Cecil;
  • Lady Frances Cecil († young);
  • Lady Elizabeth Cecil (1687–1708) ⚭ Charles Boyle, 4th Earl of Orrery .
