John Cecil, 6th Earl of Exeter
John Cecil, 6th Earl of Exeter ( May 15, 1674 - December 24, 1721 ) was a British peer and politician.
Cecil was the eldest son of John Cecil, 5th Earl of Exeter , and Lady Anne Cavendish, daughter of William Cavendish, 3rd Duke of Devonshire . As his father's apparent marriage , he carried the courtesy title of Lord Burghley .
When his father died on August 29, 1700, he became Earl of Exeter and Baron Burghley and a member of the House of Lords . He also held the office of Lord Lieutenant of Rutland .
His first marriage was on February 9, 1697, Annabella Bennet, daughter of John Bennet, 1st Baron Ossulston . The marriage remained childless, Annabella died in 1698.
His second marriage was on September 19, 1699, Elizabeth Brownlow, daughter of Sir John Brownlow, 3rd Baronet . They had three children together:
- John Cecil, 7th Earl of Exeter († 1722);
- Elizabeth Cecil ⚭ William Aislabie;
- Brownlow Cecil, 8th Earl of Exeter (1701-1754).
