John Cedric Goligher

John Cedric Goligher (born March 13, 1912 in Londonderry , Northern Ireland , † January 18, 1998 ) was a British surgeon specializing in the gastrointestinal tract and especially the large intestine .

Life

Goligher attended Foyle College and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh , graduating in 1934. He was then House Officer in the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh. During this time he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeon in both England and Scotland. He then worked at St. Mark's Hospital in London as a house surgeon (First House Surgeon and Resident Surgical Officer). From 1941 he was in the Royal Army Medical Corps with the paratroopers, where he was also in Crete and Italy and made it up to Lieutenant Colonel. After the war he was at St. Mary's Hospital (as Senior Registrar) and from 1947 Consultant Surgeon at St. Mary's and St. Mark's Hospital in London. In 1955 he became Professor of Surgery at the University of Leeds and Head of Surgery at the Leeds General Infirmary. He stayed there until his retirement in 1978. He then lived in Wetherby .

In 1981 he received the Lister Medal . He was a leading gastrointestinal surgeon in the UK, which he also wrote a widely used textbook on.

He developed stapling techniques in bowel surgery and colon anastomoses, and introduced randomized, controlled studies into surgical research.

He was an honorary member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.
