John T. Chambers (born August 23, 1949 in Cleveland ) is an American manager and has been Chairman of Cisco Systems, Inc. since 2006. From 1995 to 2015 he was also CEO of the company.

Chambers graduated from West Virginia University . There he obtained a degree in economics in 1971 and in law in 1974. He graduated from Indiana University with a Masters of Business Administration degree in finance and administration in 1975 . From 1976 to 1982 he worked at IBM , from 1982 to 1990 at Wang Laboratories . Chambers joined Cisco in 1991 as Senior Vice President, initially responsible for global sales. Since 1995 annual sales have risen from 1.2 billion US dollars to currently around 48 billion US dollars. In July 2015, after 20 years, John Chambers resigned from the post of Chief Executive Officer and became Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors. He was succeeded by Chuck Robbins .

He served on a trade committee for President Bill Clinton . He accompanied George W. Bush's inauguration as a staff member, advised him on a committee on education issues and, most recently, as vice-chairman of a committee on the protection of national infrastructure (National Infrastructure Advisory Council, NIAC).

In 2000, Chambers became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
