John Cook (2011)

John Cook (* 1946 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and was Mayor of El Paso , Texas from 2005 to 2013 .

Life

John Cook was the eldest son of his parents and grew up with six siblings. He attended Immaculata High School and graduated there in 1964. He then attended Holy Cross Seminary and then worked as a plumber for the Western Electric Company . In 1967 he resigned and volunteered for the United States Army . He took part in combat operations during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal . In 1970 he retired from active service. He was a member of the reserve until 1973.

In 1971 he settled in El Paso, Texas. There he studied at the University of Texas at El Paso and received a bachelor's degree in 1977 .

In 1998 Cook ran for a seat in the Texas House of Representatives , but was defeated by the previous MP Pat Haggerty . In 1999 he was for the constituency of North East in the City Council elected by El Paso and was this, for three two-year legislative periods until 2005. He was then elected mayor of the city in 2005, asserting himself against the previous incumbent Joe Wardy . In 2009 Cook was re-elected. Cook held two four-year terms and was the first mayor since Carlos Ramirez to be re-elected. In June 2013, Cook resigned from mayor's office.

In 2014 he ran for the office of Texas Land Commissioner , but was defeated on November 4th by his Republican opponent George P. Bush .

Cook has been married since 1970 and has six children. He is a co-founder of the US-Mexico Border Mayors Association .
