John Vaughan, 8th Earl of Lisburne

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John David Malet Vaughan, 8th Earl of Lisburne (born September 1, 1918 in Watford - † September 2, 2014 ) was a Welsh peer , barrister and entrepreneur. Until 1965 he carried the courtesy title Viscount Vaughan .

Origin and family environment

He came from an old Welsh aristocratic family who, politically interested, had either represented the constituency of Cardiganshire in the British House of Commons for over 200 years from father to son or represented the crown in this county as Lord-Lieutenant for over 200 years . Presumably in order to maintain these opportunities, the family only accepted Irish nobility titles, although they had no property in Ireland, since titleholders of Irish dignity ( Peerage of Ireland ) had no seat in the House of Lords . Indeed, members of the House of Lords cannot be members of the House of Commons at the same time, and until the Peerage Act 1963 it was legally impossible to forego the hereditary upper house seat in favor of an existing House of Commons. The first of these Irish titles, Viscount Lisbourne and Baron Fethart, was given to the Member of the House of Commons, John Vaughan, in 1695. His descendant, the Member of the House of Commons, Wilmot Vaughan, 4. Viscount Lisbourne was made Earl of Lisburne in 1766 .

Life

John Vaughan was born on September 1, 1918, the only son of Ernest Edmund Henry Malet Vaughan, 7th Earl of Lisburne . He was in Eton educated and then studied law at Magdalen College of Oxford University . He earned both a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and a Master of Arts (MA) degree . During the Second World War he served in the Welsh Guards from 1939 to 1946 , most recently as captain. In 1947 he became a barrister in the Inner Temple (called to the bar). He then held numerous managerial positions in business. From 1947 to 1987 he was director of British House Stores Ltd, then from 1987 also of Lloyds Bank. He was also President of the Wales Council for Voluntary Actions from 1976 to 1997, Governor of the University of Wales in 1969 and Deputy Chairman of Western Television from 1963 to 1982.

When his father died in 1965 he inherited him as the 8th Earl of Lisburne. He was married in 1943 to Shelagh Macauley, a Catholic for whom he converted to Catholicism and with whom he has three sons. He died on September 2, 2014. His title of nobility was inherited by his eldest son David Vaughan, 9th Earl of Lisburne .
