John Decatur Barry

John Barry Decatur (* 21st June 1839 in Wilmington , North Carolina ; † 24. March 1867 ,) was a brigadier general of the Confederate in the Civil War .

Life

Barry graduated from the University of North Carolina . When the Civil War began, he joined the Confederate Army and was assigned to the 18th North Carolina Infantry . In April 1862 he was promoted to captain and got his own company . As a member of General Lawrence O'Bryan Branch's brigade , he participated in all major combat. After the Battle of Antietam , Barry was promoted to major and took part in the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 2nd and 5th, 1863 . Then he was promoted to colonel and got his own regiment .

When General Lane was wounded at the Battle of Cold Harbor on May 31st - June 12th, 1864, Barry was promoted to Brigadier General . After the war was over, he went back to Wilmington, in bad health, and published a newspaper. He died in 1867 at the age of only 27.
