John Elrington

Sir John Elrington of Udimore († 1483 ) was an English knight .

Life

He made a career under Edward IV and developed into an important financial administrator for the king. First he began as Clerk of the Royal Kitchen , was then appointed Cofferer of the Household in 1471 and Clerk of Hanaper in 1473 , both positions in the higher financial administration in the direct vicinity of the king. From 1474 he held the position of Treasurer of the Household and held this position until his death in 1483. He was also appointed Constable of Windsor Castle in 1474 and accompanied his sovereign in the French campaign in 1475. Here he was entrusted with sovereignty over the war chest as Treasurer of War .

He was made Knight of the Bath in 1478 . and served as Sheriff of Surrey and Essex in 1479/80 . In 1479 he received permission to fortify his estates in Dixter and Udimore and was appointed to the Privy Council in 1480 . John Elrington fought under Richard, Duke of Gloucester against Scotland in 1482 , was elevated to Knight Banneret here on July 24th and was also responsible for the war chest during this campaign as Treasurer of War .

Sir John served in 1483 under Edward IV as Knight of the Kings Body , was temporarily as Knight of the Shire for Middlesex Member of Parliament and received again the post of Constable of Windsor Castle . Sir John was on July 6, 1483 at the coronation of Richard III. present and remained under Richard III. Knight of the Kings Body .

Sir John Elrington died in late 1483.
