John Erskine, 5th Lord Erskine

John Erskine, 5th Lord Erskine (* around 1490, † late summer 1555 ), was a Scottish nobleman .

Life

His father was Robert Erskine, 4th Lord Erskine , his mother was Isabel Campbell, a daughter of George Campbell of Loudoun.

With the death of his father at the Battle of Flodden Field on September 9, 1513, he assumed the title of 5th Lord Erskine . De jure he was entitled to the title of 17th Earl of Mar (first award), but he never held it during his lifetime. This title was only confirmed posthumously in a document on June 23, 1565.

John Erskine was probably born around 1490, and was knighted by 1510 . In 1515 he served as the Scottish envoy to the French court. The following year he was appointed by John Stewart, 2nd Duke of Albany to the Regency Council for the minor King James V , at the same time he was appointed commander of Stirling Castle . He held both functions until Archibald Douglas, 6th Earl of Angus , took over the reign . In the following he is mentioned again as the keeper of Edinburgh Castle , but without a year.

He was married to Lady Margaret Campbell, daughter of Archibald Campbell, 2nd Earl of Argyll . With her he had five sons and four daughters:
