John Farmer (composer, 1835)
John Farmer (born August 16, 1835 in Nottingham , † July 17, 1901 in Oxford ) was an English musician, composer and music teacher. He studied music in Leipzig and Coburg .
John Farmer worked in his father's business from 1853 to 1857 before moving to Zurich to make a living as a music teacher. Back in England he was a member of the teaching staff of the renowned Harrow School from 1864 to 1885 . He then worked as an organist for Balliol College in Oxford until his death .
John Farmer distinguished himself in England as an advocate of the music of Bach and Brahms . In his own works he left behind oratorios and other church music as well as the fairy tale play ( opera ) "Cinderella"; He also composed numerous school songs , including the famous Harrow School song "Forty Years On".
