John Fernström

John Fernström (born December 6, 1897 in Yichang , Hubei Province , China, † October 19, 1961 in Lund , Sweden) was a Swedish composer and conductor.

He grew up in Yichang, China, where his father led a mission. In 1907 he moved with his family to Sweden, where he studied violin in Malmö . Fernström played the violin in the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra from 1916 to 1932 , which he later conducted. He continued to study violin with Max Schlüter in Copenhagen and between 1923 and 1932 composition with Peder Gram . From 1930 he studied conducting in Sondershausen . In 1948 he became director of the Lunder Conservatory and headed it until his death in 1961. In addition to music, Fernström has been interested in painting since childhood and in some cases combined this interest with his music studies.

Despite twelve symphonies, several string quartets and concertos for violin, clarinet and bassoon as well as two operas and numerous chorale and vocal works, only a few music connoisseurs know him.
