John Frith

John Frith (* 1503 in Westerham , Kent , † July 4, 1533 in London ) was an English martyr of the Reformation.

He was a student at Eton and Cambridge at King's College until 1525 . After graduating, he was called to the Christ Church ( Wolsey's College ) as a canon , where he met evangelical students. Among them was the future priest and scholar William Tyndale .

In 1527/28 he and numerous others were arrested on suspicion of heresy . Some of his fellow prisoners withdrew, he managed to escape to the Netherlands and later to Marburg . In 1530 he published Patrick's Places and wrote numerous propaganda writings of his own for the Reformation. In 1532 he stayed in England for a short time, but soon returned to Flanders . After his marriage and return to England, he was burned as a heretic in Smithfield / London in 1533 .
