John "Jonathan" Gilmore (born July 5, 1935 in Los Angeles , California - † October 13, 2016 ) was an American author and gonzo journalist .

Life

John Gilmore was born in Los Angeles in 1935 and grew up in Hollywood. His mother worked for MGM as an actress while his step-grandfather worked for RKO Pictures . His parents separated when he was six months old and he was raised by his grandmother. Gilmore's father worked for the LAPD . His father wrote and hosted a radio show, a public service provided by the LAPD, in which promising starlets and well-known stars (including Bonita Granville , Ann Rutherford , Joan Davis , Hillary Brooke, Ann Jeffreys, Brenda Marshall and other actors which the young John Gilmore was introduced to) from the film business. As a child he starred in a film directed by Gene Autry . He worked with the LAPD and appeared in their security films and hosted several radio shows. Ultimately, he also starred in several commercial films. Actors Ida Lupino and John Hodiak were the mentors for Gilmore. Through John Hodiak, he met Marilyn Monroe in the 1950s. He starred in some films and TV series alongside well-known actors. He later wrote poetry and screenplays, but some time later switched to a career as an author (True Crime) and journalist. The author got his interpretations of his “sexy action and noir novels” from the noir films of the 1940s.

In his books about James Dean and Marilyn Monroe , John Gilmore reveals that he had a relationship with both of them and, at least in the case of the relationship with James Dean, sparked a controversial discussion due to the bisexual relationship.

So far none of his books has been published in German.
