John Graham, 4th Baronet

Sir John Alexander Noble Graham, 4th Baronet GCMG ( July 15, 1926 - December 11, 2019 ) was a British diplomat .

Life

He is the son of Rachel Septima Sprot and Lt.-Col. Sir John Reginald Noble Graham, 3rd Baronet. He married Marygold Ellinor Gabrielle Austin on January 7, 1956. He married Janet Mackenzie Hayes on June 27, 1992. He studied at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England. From 1944 to 1947 he was promoted to lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards. He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire. From 1950 to 1986 he was employed in the foreign service. In 1972 he became Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG). From 1974 to 1977 he was ambassador to Baghdad. From 1977 to 1978 he was Deputy Undersecretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. In 1979 he was knighted as Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (KCMG). From 1979 to 1980 he was ambassador to Tehran.

In early 1980 meetings were held in front of the British embassy in Tehran. After Tehran was taken hostage , the British government called its diplomats from Tehran. The hostage-taking began on April 30, 1980 at the Iranian Embassy in London . A spokesman for the FO said that John Graham had been recalled from Tehran to give advice on how to deal with the embassy siege.

After a British flag tanker was shot at in the Persian Gulf, the British government closed a Persian arms trading agency and had the tankers escorted by the Armilla Force.

In 1980, on the death of his father, he inherited his title of baronet , of Larbert House and Househill in the County of Stirling . From 1980 to 1981 he was Deputy Undersecretary of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. From 1982 to 1986 he was Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to NATO and the North Atlantic Council in Brussels. In 1986 he was raised to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George (GCMG). From 1987 to 2001 he was Chancellor of the Order of St. Michael and St. George.
