Anthony Derrick Parsons
Sir Anthony Derrick Parsons (born September 9, 1922 , † August 12, 1996 in Ashburton, Devon) was a British diplomat , lecturer and author.
Life
Parsons attended King's School in Canterbury and Balliol College, Oxford University, where he graduated in Arabic and Turkish. He entered the Royal Army, which he left after 14 years as a military attaché to enter the diplomatic service.
His diplomatic career began in Ankara from 1955 to 1959. From 1959 to 1960 was employed in Amman , 1960 to 1961 in Cairo and from 1964 to 1965 in Khartoum . He was Political Agent in Bahrain from 1965 to 1969 .
From 1969 to 1971 he was Counselor at UN Headquarters, and from 1971 to 1974 Undersecretary in the United Kingdom's Foreign Office . From 1974 to 1979 he was Ambassador to Tehran, from 1979 to 1982 British Permanent Representative to the United Nations and 1982/83 Special Advisor to the Prime Minister for Foreign Affairs. From 1984 to 1987 he was a Research Fellow at Exeter University .
He married Sheila Baird in 1948 and had two daughters and two sons with her.
