John Graham Nicholls (born December 19, 1929 in London ) is a British - Swiss doctor and physiologist .

Life

John G. Nicholls is a retired professor of physiology. He received his doctorate from Charing Cross Hospital as Dr. med. and received his PhD from the Department of Biophysics at University College London in 1955 . He then worked at University College London and the Universities of Oxford , Harvard , Yale and Stanford . In 1983 he was appointed professor of pharmacology at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel . Since his retirement in 1998 he has been professor of neurobiology at SISSA (International School for Advanced Studies) in Trieste. The International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) named a research grant after him in his honor. He is also a member of the Royal Society .

Act

John G. Nicholls is known for his research in the field of neurobiology. He investigated synaptic transmission in the nervous systems of invertebrates and mammals as well as the problem of why neurons in the brain and spinal cord can no longer regenerate after an injury . For his studies he developed a novel method for the preparation of the central nervous system (CNS) of mammals, which allowed an investigation of the mechanisms of neurite growth and CNS regeneration. With the help of this method he was able to show that a complete restoration of function is possible in very young animals. In recent years he has been working on how the breathing rhythm is generated by the nervous system. He is also the main author of the book "From Neuron to Brain", which is already in its fifth edition.
