John Guest

John "Jack" Schofield Guest (born March 28, 1906 in Montreal , † June 12, 1972 in Toronto ) was a Canadian rower .

John Guest began rowing in 1924. In 1928 he retired in the semi-finals of the Diamond Sculls , the single competition at the Henley Royal Regatta against his compatriot Joseph Wright . At the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, Wright and Guest started together in double sculls . In the run-up they defeated the boat from the Netherlands. In the interim they were defeated by the German boat with Horst Hoeck and Gerhard Voigt . After beating the French in the hope race, the Canadians met the Germans again in the quarter-finals and won this time. After a bye in the semifinals, they lost in the final against the US rowers Paul Costello and Charles McIlvaine .

In 1929 Guest retired from the Diamond Sculls against Joseph Wright, in 1930 he won the final against the German Gerhard Boetzelen . Then he ended his active rowing career. Guest was President of the Don Rowing Club of Mississauga for many years , and in the 1950s and 1960s he was active in the Canadian Association and the World Rowing Association. From 1960 to 1968 he was director of the Canadian Olympic Association, the predecessor organization of today's Canadian Olympic Committee .
