John H. Vandenberg

John Henry Vandenberg (born December 18, 1904 in Ogden , Utah , † June 3, 1992 ) was the ninth Presiding Bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints .

Life

Vandenberg was born in 1904 in Ogden, Utah, the fifth child of a family of Dutch immigrants. He attended the Weber Academy and graduated from there in 1923. In 1925 he went to the Netherlands as a missionary. There he met his future wife, a Dutch convert. Back in Utah, the two married on June 10, 1930 in the Salt Lake Temple . The marriage resulted in two daughters. Vandenberg now worked in Salt Lake City for a company that traded in sheep and their wool. He later worked for the same company in Denver , Colorado .

In 1961 he was called to serve as the ninth Presiding Bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As such, he was a member of various church committees. In 1972 he was called to be Assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles . The new Presiding Bishop was Victor L. Brown , the previous 2nd Advisor to the Presiding Bishop . When the office of Assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles was abolished in 1976, Vandenberg became a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy. In 1978 he retired.
