John Halliburton (* 1740 in Scotland , † 1808 in Halifax , Nova Scotia ) was a Scottish-born medic and politician in Nova Scotia, Canada .

John Halliburton was the son of a Scottish Presbyterian priest. He worked as a ship's doctor for the Royal Navy , but settled in Newport ( Rhode Island ) before the American Revolution , where he opened a prosperous medical practice and in 1767 Susanna (h) Brenton (1747-1818; the daughter of Admiral Jahleel Brenton ) got married. As a loyalist - when the American Revolutionary War was lost - he gave up his practice in Newport and went to Halifax, where the Naval Medical Department was subordinate to him in 1782 . He also opened his own practice in Halifax.

Halliburton was still a member of the North British Society in Halifax (now The Scots ) in 1782 , an association of people of Scottish descent, whose presidency he also took over in 1787. Also in 1787 he was appointed to the Council of Twelve , an advisory chamber to the governor of Nova Scotia. In 1797 Halliburton was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

He was the father of Brenton Halliburton (1774-1860), who later became chief judge at the Nova Scotia Supreme Court . John Halliburton died in Halifax in 1808, his grave is on the Old Burying Ground there .
