John Haugeland
John Haugeland (born March 13, 1945 - June 23, 2010 ) was an American philosopher .
John Haugeland was a professor at the University of Chicago and head of the philosophy department there. He previously taught at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of California, Berkeley, and was a member of the Palo Alto Research Center .
Haugeland is best known for the term GOFAI (Good old fashioned artificial intelligence), which he coined in his book Artificial Intelligence: The Very Idea (1985). The term is intended to distinguish the classic artificial intelligence according to Marvin Minsky and Herbert A. Simon , which deals with the manipulation of symbolic representations, from newer approaches that relate more to the perception of the environment of a system and are often more reactive (e.g. . Neural Networks ).
Haugeland dealt mainly with the philosophy of mind , cognitive science , phenomenology and Martin Heidegger .
