John Hawkins (composer)
John Hawkins (born July 26, 1944 in Montreal , † January 14, 2007 in Toronto ) was a Canadian composer and pianist.
Hawkins studied piano with Lubka Kolessa at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec and composition at McGill University with István Anhalt until 1970 . In the mid-1960s he also attended the summer courses in Tanglewood , and in 1969 he took part in a conducting workshop with Pierre Boulez in Basel.
As a pianist, Hawkins took part in concerts by the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ) in Montreal and was a founding member of the New Music Concerts in Toronto. With the SMCQ he recorded Jacques Hétus Cycle . From 1970 to 2006, Hawkins taught music theory and analysis, composition and orchestration at the University of Toronto . In 1983 he was awarded the Jules Léger Prize for New Chamber Music for his composition Breaking Through .
