John Davison Hewie (born December 13, 1927 in Pretoria , † May 11, 2015 in Boston , Lincolnshire ) was a Scottish football player and coach.
career
Born in the Transvaal to Scottish parents, Hewie played for various South African clubs in his youth. In 1949 he went to Charlton Athletic , who had already brought several players from South Africa into the First Division . There he developed into a regular player and played over 500 competitive games for the club by the end of his professional career in 1968. He was also noticed in the Scottish national team , so that between 1956 and 1960 he played 19 international matches. He was a member of the team at the 1958 World Cup .
After the end of his career he returned to South Africa and coached various teams there. In the 1990s he moved his retirement home to the UK.
