John Hocking (born August 6, 1957 in Australia ) is Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations , Rechtspfleger of the International Criminal Court for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and, at the same time, Rechtspfleger of the International Residual Mechanism for the Ad Hoc Criminal Courts (UNMICT).

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon appointed John Hocking for two terms, first on May 15, 2009 and again on May 15, 2013, and as Head of the Secretariat of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia ( ICTY ), a neutral body which provides legal, diplomatic and administrative support to judges, prosecutors and defense. On January 18, 2012, Ban also appointed Hocking to the Chief Executive of the International Residual Mechanism for the Ad Hoc Criminal Courts and entrusted him with the start of its work.

Hocking joined the ICTY in 1997 as a legal officer in the first ICTY trial with several defendants, in the Celebici case. He then acted as Senior Legal Officer for the ICTY Appeal Chambers and the International Criminal Court for Rwanda . From 2004 to 2009 he was the deputy judicial officer of the ICTY.

Before joining the United Nations, Hocking held legal and political advisory functions, both internationally and nationally, including with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris, the Australian state television and radio station, and the Special Broadcasting Service , British Film Institutes in London and on the Australian Film Commission. Early in his career, Hocking worked as a legal associate for Judge Michael Kirby, former President of the Court of Appeals and Judge at the High Court of Australia, and for human rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson QC in London.

Hocking was appointed to the bar at Lincoln's Inn , London, and is admitted to the bar with the Supreme Court of Victoria and Supreme Court of New South Wales in Australia.

He holds a Masters of Laws with Honors from the London School of Economics and Political Science , a Bachelor of Law from Sydney University and a Bachelor of Science from Monash University in Melbourne . He attended leadership training at Harvard Kennedy School .
