John Howard Van Amringe

John Howard Van Amringe , called Van Am, (born April 3, 1835 in Philadelphia , † September 10, 1910 in Morristown (New Jersey) ) was an American mathematician.

The family moved to New York City and Van Amringe in 1841, and studied at Yale University from 1854 to 1856 . He was then a math teacher before he resumed his studies at Columbia College in 1858 with a bachelor's degree in 1860 and a master's degree in 1863. While still a student, he taught Greek, Latin and other subjects at Columbia College. In 1860 he became a tutor of mathematics and in 1863 adjunct professor, in 1865 professor in the School of Mines and in 1873 in the School of Arts. From 1892 until his retirement in 1910, he headed the mathematics faculty.

From 1888 to 1890 he was the first president of the American Mathematical Society .
