John Johnson (composer)

John Johnson (* around 1540 ; † 1594 in London ) was an English lutenist and composer of the Elizabethan era .

Life

From 1579 until his death he was the lutenist of Queen Elisabeth the First and from 1581 belonged to the Royal Chapel . His popular Pavane The Flatt Pavin was edited by Jane Pickering as an arrangement for two lutes. Most of his works, almost all for lute solo or in duet, are pavans, gaillards or arrangements of popular melodies. He was the father of Robert Johnson .

A complete edition of his lute music was published by Jan WJ Burgers.
