John Joseph McGee

John Joseph McGee (born August 6, 1845 in Wexford , † April 10, 1927 ) was an Irish-Canadian civil servant . From 1882 to 1907 he held the position of the Clerk of the Privy Council and thus that of the highest official in Canada .

Life

John Joseph McGee was the half-brother of Thomas D'Arcy McGee , who is considered one of the fathers of the Confederation . At his request he immigrated to Canada from Ireland in 1863 after attending St Peter's College . There he studied at McGill University in Montréal . He was then hired by the Canadian government to help build the Intercolonial Railroad . In 1879 he joined then in the civil service and worked for the Ministry of Internal Affairs Canada (Department of the Interior) operates.

After he had been active as an assistant clerk since January 1880 , he took over the position of the Clerk of the Privy Council in 1882 (German: government assistant of the Canadian Privy Council ). In that capacity, McGee was Canada's senior official, presiding over the Privy Council Office and serving as assistant to the Prime Minister . He held this position until 1907 and thus remained in office longer than any clerk before or after him.

In 1871 he married Elizabeth Crotty, with whom he had six sons and three daughters. Two of his sons, Frank and James , were well known ice hockey players.
