John Charles Kerin AO (born November 21, 1937 in Bowral , New South Wales ) is an Australian politician .

biography

After studying at the University of New England , which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1967, Kerin initially worked as an economist at the Office for Agriculture and Resource Management (ABARE).

He began his federal political career in December 1972 when he was elected member of the Australian House of Representatives , where he represented the interests of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) in the Macarthur constituency. In December 1975 he lost his seat as a MP after the ALP government under Prime Minister Gough Whitlam was ousted by Governor General John Robert Kerr during the constitutional crisis . In 1977 he also obtained a Bachelor of Economics (B.Econ.) At the Australian National University in Canberra in a postgraduate course .

September 1978 he succeeded in returning to the federal parliament after he was elected member of the Werriwa constituency in New South Wales and held this mandate until 1993. In the following years he became a supporter of the future Prime Minister Bob Hawke , who appointed him Minister of Primary Industry after his election in March 1983. After Hawkes' re-election, he became Secretary of Energy in June 1987 and then Minister of Transport and Communications for a period in 1991.

Because of his practical and theoretical knowledge he was consequently, if unexpectedly in time, Chancellor of the Exchequer in June 1991, after the previous incumbent Paul Keating resigned from this office. The reason for Keating's resignation was his unsuccessful attempt to replace Prime Minister Hawke. Kerin introduced a change in financial policy, especially in the key interest rate , which was less economic and more motivated to pacify party political camps. Over the next few months, Australia experienced the worst recession since the early 1930s . When the Hawke administration finally achieved its worst value in the polls since taking office in 1983 on December 6, 1991, Kerin was dismissed as Chancellor of the Exchequer.

A fortnight later, Keating took over the office of Prime Minister and appointed him Minister for Trade and Overseas Development in his government. He held this office until he left parliament in December 1993.

After retiring from political life, he took on leading positions in the Australian Food and Livestock Corporation and other organizations such as the Tropical Savannah Authority .

He was awarded the Order of Australia in 2001 and 2018 for his political merits .
