John King (composer)

John King (* 28. November 1953 in Minneapolis ) is an American composer , Gitatrist and violist .

King studied at the California Institute of the Arts with Morton Subotnick , Leonard Stein , James Tenney and Stephen Mosko until 1976 . From 1985 he worked as a composer for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company (MCDC) with John Cage until his death . From 1999 to 2003 he was the musicurator of the New York cultural house The Kitchen , from 2003 to 2012 he was co-director of the music committee of the MDCD and one of the company's four musicians alongside David Behrman , Takehisa Kosugi and Christian Wolff . From 1982 to 1997 he taught atLincoln Center Institute for the Arts in Education , since 2003 he has been teaching music history at New York University , since 2012 composition and digital music at Dartmouth College .
