John L. Tymoczko

John L. Tymoczko (born June 18, 1948 in New Kensington , Pennsylvania - † May 26, 2019 ) was an American biochemist.

Tymoczko received his bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago in 1970 and his PhD in biochemistry in 1973 with Shutsung Liao at the Ben May Institute of Cancer Research at the University of Chicago. His dissertation was entitled Factors responsible for the nuclear retention of androgen receptor of rat ventral prostate . As a post-doctoral student , he was with Hewson Swift (1920-2004) in the Department of Biology in Chicago. He was Towsley Professor of Biology at Carleton College until his retirement .

His research mainly focused on steroid receptors, ribonucleoproteins and peptidases .

He is one of the co-authors of the new editions of Lubert Stryer's biochemistry textbook .
