John Langalibalele Dube
John Langalibalele Mafukuzela Dube (born February 11, 1871 at the Inanda mission station , Natal , † February 11, 1946 in Durban ) was a South African philosopher, man of letters, theologian and politician.
Life
Dube was born the son of a pastor and sub-chief of the Ngcoto tribe of the Zulu . He was raised Christian in Inanda and attended the American Board Mission Theological School in Amanzimtoti . In 1887 he accompanied a missionary on a trip to the USA , where he attended college and had various jobs. After being offered a post as a teacher , he returned to Natal and married in 1894. Together with his brother-in-law he founded two churches and three preaching stations. In 1897 he was named pastor ordained . At the same time he began to raise money for a school based on the Booker T. Washington model , and in 1901 the Ohlange School opened. In 1904 he founded a bilingual newspaper called Ilanga lase Natal , which was viewed as radical, so that he was briefly arrested in 1906.
The arrest further politicized Dube. In the following years he took part in various meetings, including those to discuss the constitution of the South African Union . In 1912 he was a co-founder of the Natal Native Congress and in the same year was one of the founding members of the South African Native National Congress (SANNC), later the African National Congress, alongside Walter Benson Rubusana , Pixley ka Isaka Seme and Sol Plaatje . He was elected its first president. In his role as ecclesiastical minister he was a pastor of the Congregational Church .
In 1930 he wrote the first novel ( Insila ka Shaka , "The Servant of King Shaka") in isiZulu .
Awards
- In 1948 the Johannesburg district of Dube - today part of Soweto - was named after him
- In 2005 he was posthumously awarded the Order of Luthuli in gold.
