Dube is a district of Soweto , which in turn is part of the metropolitan municipality City of Johannesburg in South Africa .

geography

The township settlement of Dube is located around 16 kilometers southwest of the center of Johannesburg . In 2011 the district officially had 18,123 inhabitants, around 55% of whom stated isiZulu as their first language. It belongs to Region D of the City of Johannesburg, which includes all of Soweto.

Dube is located in the north of central Soweto. To the northeast is the Meadowlands district , to the east of Orlando West and to the west of Mofolo .

history

The district was founded in 1946 by the City Council Johannesburg , which was dominated by the United Party , as an "African village" for relatively wealthy blacks on the area of Klipspruit Farm. This followed the recommendations of the Fagan Commission . The district was named after John Langalibalele Dube , the first chairman of the South African Native National Congress , who died in the same year . Originally, the residents should be allowed to own the land, due to the pressure of the apartheid government that came into office in 1948 , especially the later Minister for "Native Affairs" Hendrik Verwoerd , a long lease of initially 99 years, later only 30 years was allowed. The size of the property was reduced from 464 m² to 247 m². In 1968 this option was completely abolished. The apartheid government tried to settle only Nguni in Dube , but the rule was applied inconsistently.

1954 Dube received township status. A hostel (dormitory) was opened in Dube in 1955 to accommodate migrant workers. Only male workers lived here. In 1957 there were violent clashes between the Zulu and Basotho for the first time . The hostel model was expanded extensively in the industrial metropolitan areas in the following decades; the level of violence turned out to be typical.

Well-known residents were the couple Alfred Bitini Xuma and Madie Beatrice Hall Xuma and Andrew Mlangeni .
