John Lewis Gervais

John Lewis Gervais (* around 1741 in Hanover , Electorate Braunschweig-Lüneburg ; †  August 18, 1798 in Charleston , South Carolina ) was an American politician of German origin. In 1782 and 1783 he was a delegate for South Carolina in the Continental Congress .

Career

John Gervais attended the public schools in his German homeland. He later emigrated to America via England , where he arrived in Charleston on June 27, 1764. There he worked in trade. Soon he was also a land and plantation owner. In the 1770s he joined the revolutionary movement. In 1775 and 1776 he served on two revolutionary bodies, the Provincial Convention and the Provincial Congress . He was also a member of the security committee of his homeland from 1775 to 1776 and again in 1781. In 1778 he was made Deputy Postmaster General for South Carolina . He took part in the War of Independence . Among other things, he was in action in the defense of the city of Charleston. He was a member and chairman of the South Carolina Senate in 1782 and 1783 . At the same time he represented his state in the Continental Congress. In 1794 and 1795 he was the Commissioner of Public Accounts for South Carolina. John Gervais died in Charleston on August 18, 1798.
