John M. Martinis

John M. Martinis (* around 1958) is an American physicist who deals with quantum information theory. He is a professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB).

Martinis studied from 1976 at the University of California, Berkeley with a bachelor's degree in 1980 and a doctorate in 1987. In his dissertation, he demonstrated superconducting qubits . As a post-doctoral student , he worked at the Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (CEA) in Saclay and then at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder. There he developed a Johnson Noise Thermometer (JNT), based on Johnson noise and using superconducting electronics, which was used to measure the Boltzmann constant (2000, 2005). In 2004 he moved to UCSB as a professor.

Starting in 2014, he will also be researching the construction of a fault-tolerant quantum computer for Google .

2019 Google's research group Martinis published by the researchers for the first time real demonstrated an experiment, quantum superiority ( "quantum supremacy") claim.

In 2014 Martinis received the Fritz London Memorial Prize for fundamental experimental progress and pioneering work in quantum control, quantum information processing and quantum optics with superconducting qubits and microwaves (laudation). In 2010 he and Andrew Cleland received the Science Breakthrough of the Year from the American Association for the Advancement of Science for the first proof of the quantum behavior of a mechanical oscillator (see quantum machine ).

He is a fellow of the American Physical Society .
