John MacKay, Baron MacKay of Ardbrecknish

John Jackson MacKay, Baron MacKay of Ardbrecknish PC , JP , DL (born November 15, 1938 in Lochgilphead , Argyll , † February 21, 2001 ) was a British politician.

Life

John MacKay was born to Jackson and Jean Mackay . He studied at the University of Glasgow , where he earned a bachelor's degree and a diploma in education. He later served as the head of the mathematics student council at Oban High School in Oban . In 1961 Mackay married Sheena Wagner with whom he had three descendants, Fiona (* 1964), David (* 1967) and Colin (* 1969).

Political career

In the general election in February 1974 MacKay ran for the Scottish Conservative Party for the mandate of the constituency of Na h-Eileanan an Iar . However, he was only able to collect 6.9% of the vote. In the constituency of Argyll , MacKay ran in the general election in October 1974 . However, he was defeated by the SNP candidate Iain MacCormick , who had won the seat in the elections in February of the same year against the conservative Michael Noble . Due to massive loss of votes on the part of MacCormick, MacKay succeeded in gaining a majority in the 1979 general election. As a result, he moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . 1982 Mackay Parliamentary Private Secretary of Scotland Minister George Younger . MacKay also held the post of Undersecretary of State in the Scotland Ministry between 1982 and 1987.

Before the general election in 1983 , MacKays constituency Argyll was dissolved in favor of the newly created constituency Argyll and Bute . With a slight gain in votes, MacKay was able to win the mandate. In the 1987 general election , MacKay lost his seat to Ray Michie , the Liberal candidate, and left the lower house. In June 1991 MacKay was installed as Baron Mackay of Ardbrecknish, of Tayvallich in the District of Argyll and Bute as a Life Peer . During his time as Lord-in-Waiting between 1993 and 1994, MacKay served as Undersecretary in the Department of Transportation. Between 1994 and 1997 he was also State Secretary for Social Affairs. In 1996 he was appointed to the Privy Council.
