John Douglas "Johnny" McKinnon junior (born July 15, 1902 in Guysborough , Nova Scotia , † February 8, 1969 near Oak Park , Illinois , USA ) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played 210 games during his active career between 1923 and 1939 for the Canadiens de Montréal , Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Quakers in the National Hockey League on the position of defender .
Career
McKinnon first appeared in 1923 when he appeared in the United States Amateur Hockey Association for the Cleveland Indians and Fort Pitt Panthers. Before the 1925/26 season, the defender then moved to the professional camp and signed a contract with the Canadiens de Montréal from the National Hockey League . With the exception of two inserts for the Canadiens, he was mainly used during the season for the Minneapolis Millers in the amateur league Central Hockey League.
Before the 1926/27 season McKinnon was transferred for a sum of money to the Pittsburgh Pirates , where the attacking defender with 13 goals was one of the few bright spots in the Pirates' squad. It was only after two weaker years in the Pirates' squad that the defender was able to build on the performance from his rookie season with 17 points , including ten goals . For the 1930/31 season , the Pittsburgh Pirates franchise was relocated and played as the Philadelphia Quakers in the NHL.
After the season McKinnon left the Quakers and the NHL. He moved to the Kansas City Pla-Mors in the American Hockey Association for two years , where he also played for the Oklahoma City Warriors and St. Louis Flyers in the following years until 1938 . In the 1938/39 season he worked after the end of his active career as a coach of the St. Louis Flyers.
McKinnon died on February 8, 1969 near Oak Park , Illinois, in a traffic accident.
