John Elden McLeay, Jr. (born March 22, 1922 in Adelaide ; † December 26, 2000 ) was an Australian politician of the Liberal Party of Australia (LP) and diplomat , who was a member of the House of Representatives between 1966 and 1981 and was a minister several times . He also served as Consul General in Los Angeles from 1981 to 1984 .

Life

John Elden McLeay, Jr., was the son of politician John McLeay Sr. , who was also a member from 1949 to 1966 and speaker of the House of Representatives from 1956 to 1966. His uncle, George McLeay , served on the Senate for 17 years and served as a minister several times. He himself completed his school education at Scotch College in Adelaide . He joined the Australian Imperial Force (2nd AIF) during World War II in 1941 and served as a rifleman in New Guinea between 1942 and 1943 . After the war he began his political career for the Liberal Party of Australia (LP) in theLocal government and was a member of the Unley City council from 1949 to 1970 and mayor of that city from 1961 to 1963 .

After his father John McLeay Sr. had resigned his seat in the House of Representatives, John McLeay Jr. as his successor on November 26, 1966 to the Liberal Party in the in South Australia located constituency Boothby first time a member of the House of Representatives elected and was this fifteen years until January 22, 1981. In the McMahon government , he assumed his first government office on August 20, 1971, as Minister Assisting the Minister for Civil Aviation, which he held until December 5, 1972, after the coalition of the Liberal Party and Country Party had previously joined the In the elections of December 2, 1972, the Australian Labor Party (ALP) was defeated.

In the subsequently formed Fraser II government , a coalition of LP and NCP, McLeay acted as Minister for Construction between December 22, 1975 and December 20, 1977 and was also Assistant Minister in the Ministry of Defense (Minister Assisting the Minister for Defense) . In the subsequent government Fraser III he stayed December 20, 1977 to December 5, 1978 first continues construction minister and took over after a reshuffle between 5 December 1978 and November 3, 1980 the post of minister of administrative services (Minister for Administrative Services) . John McLeay, who was known for his defense of apartheid governments in South Africa and Rhodesia , replaced Peter Barbour as Consul General in Los Angeles in April 1981 and remained in this post until he was replaced by Basil Teasey in February 1984.
