John Middleton (knight)

Sir John Middleton of Belsay († 1476 / 77 ) was an English knight .

Life

He was the eldest son of Sir John Middleton (around 1373-1441) and his wife Joan, daughter of Sir Clement Skelton. When his father died, he inherited most of his lands including the family seat of Belsay Castle in Northumberland , while his brothers received lands in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire .

During the Wars of the Roses , he sided with the House of York . He fought at the First Battle of St Albans in 1455 and at the Battle of Blore Heath in 1459 . He received a general amnesty from King Henry VI in February 1460 . ( House of Lancaster ), was even made Royal Herald and given the lands, appropriately titled Keeper of Cleobury Park , previously confiscated from Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York . But he remained loyal to the House of York and fought on March 29, 1461 at the Battle of Towton and 1464 at the battles of Hedgeley Moor and Hexham .

He died in 1476 or 1477.

Marriage and offspring

Sir John was married twice, first to Eleanor, daughter of Rowland Tempest, and second to Elizabeth, daughter of Robert Ogle and widow of Sir William Heron of Ford .

From his second marriage he left at least one son, Sir John Middleton of Belsay (1440-1503).
