John Opel

John R. Opel (born January 5, 1925 in Kansas City , Missouri , † November 3, 2011 ) was an American manager in the PC industry.

John R. Opel was President of IBM from 1974 to 1983 and CEO from 1981 to 1985 . Through the United Way charity , he met Mary Maxwell Gates , Bill Gates' mother . This influenced IBM's decision to use MS-DOS as the operating system for the IBM PC .
