John Ore

John Thomas Ore (* 17th December 1933 in Philadelphia ; † 22. August 2014 ) was an American jazz - bassist .

John Ore studied cello at the New School of Music in Philadelphia 1943-46 and bass at the Juilliard School in New York in 1952. In 1953 he worked with the singer and guitarist Tiny Grimes , with George Wallington and Lester Young in 1954. In the following In the year he played with Bud Powell , Ben Webster and Coleman Hawkins , in 1957 again with Powell. Ore had his own trio in 1958, worked freelance in New York the following year and was a member of Thelonious Monk's quartet from the spring of 1960 . With him he visited Europe in the spring of 1961 and played the Monk records Monk's Dream and Criss-Cross ( Columbia Records ) in 1962 and 1963 . After leaving Monk shortly thereafter, he worked as a freelancer, touring with the Earl Hines Orchestra and working with Sun Ra . In the following years, Ore had few opportunities to perform; in the 1990s he made records with the baritone saxophonist Cecil Payne .
