Sir John Pole, 5th Baronet (around 1733 - February 19, 1760 ) was a British nobleman .

origin

John Pole came from the Pole family , a Gentry family from Devon . He was the only son of Sir William Pole, 4th Baronet and his wife Elizabeth Warry . He was still a minor when his father died in 1741 and he became the heir to the family's estates and the title of Baronet , of Shute House in the County of Devon.

Political activity

His father had recommended in his will of 1733 that he should never run for general election as a member of the Honiton borough , where several members of the family had been elected since 1640. Finally, in 1754, Pole ran for a by-election in Taunton , Somerset . He was supported by the local gentry, while the opposing candidate, Robert Maxwell, was supported by Charles Wyndham, 2nd Earl of Egremont , a member of the government. After a six-month, extremely complex and expensive election campaign, Maxwell was finally elected as a member of Parliament in December 1754.

Family and offspring

Pole's first marriage was Elizabeth Mills (1737–1758), a daughter of the banker and plantation owner John Mills from Woodford , Essex . His wife became a co-heir of her father, who also owned a plantation on St. Kitts in the West Indies. With his wife he had a son:

In her second marriage, Pole married Anna Maria Palmer, the daughter of a Reverend Palmer. The marriage remained childless. His heir became his only son, John.
